Abandoned(finished novel, not related to ffxi in anyway) Sample

“For the love of God, please turn that crap down.” Erick screamed from the backseat of the car. His cheeks huffed slightly, he was big in stature but his looks were fooling, he wasn’t a brute, or at least not when he didn’t want to be. “Our car means our rules brother.” Corey turned to him and said, his blue eyes meeting Erick’s blue irises. “Please turn that stoner-hippie music down.” “Shut it Erick!” Michelle yelled from the drivers’ seat, she kept her eyes on the road seeing as how the wintry weather wasn’t easy to navigate in. Erick grumbled to himself, but then he laughed. “What’s funny?” Corey turned to him and asked, his dirty-blonde hair peeking out from under his wool cap. They were driving to the mountains, they were taking their good buddy on one of their favorite pastimes, skiing. “Does it look like I can ski?” he asked and the car erupted into laughter. Michelle followed the road to where she was suppose to turn, her car crept slowly over the icy road. “This is it.” Corey said excited, his heart thumped wildly inside of his chest. They had all requested the weekend off, and he and his wife had driven down to Illinois to pick up their friend Erick. Michelle looked at the pamphlet that was spread against the dashboard. They were in foreign land as Corey would call it, they decided instead of driving back to Massachusetts they would go skiing in Erick’s neck of the woods. So Chell went online and grabbed all the resorts she could find near his home, that way they could drop him off and be on their way home and prepare for the work week ahead of them.

Her car stuttered to a stop in the empty parking lot. “Are you sure this is it?” Corey turned to her and asked, looking at the old brick resort that look deserted. “This is the address it gave, and don’t argue with me, unlike you I have a keen sense of direction.” “That was once.” Corey defended before Erick laughed. “I’m not going in there.” Erick said with his seatbelt still around his body. Michelle pushed her door open and the cold air blew into her face, she winced from the sudden chill she felt. The passenger side door flew open and her husband got out also. Michelle focused her blue eyes on the big man in the back seat. Corey started laughing, saying how haunted this place looked. But sure enough, when he checked the pamphlet, this was the address, but he wanted to sue them for false advertising. The building in the picture looked a lot better than this, but this was the resort nonetheless. He popped open the trunk and removed their bags. Chell pressed her face against the window of the car, peering at Erick, who hasn’t moved a muscle. “Scared?” she asked. “What if I break my leg or something?” He hadn’t had the experience skiing as they did. “You won’t, it’s not that easy, but it’s not that hard.” He stubbornly undid his seatbelt and got out of the car, sighing to show he hated being defeated. They told him they were kidnapping him, but they didn’t indulge where they were going until they were an hour away from his home.

“Hello?” she called, the place looked a lot better on the inside than it did from outside. She noticed the sleeping cabins pushed into the back of the resort and wondered how many occupants were here. There was an almost eerie squeak when Erick finally opened the door and stepped into the dimly lit reception area. “Did we come when they were closed or something?” he asked them. Corey let the bag hang off his shoulder, he walked up and pressed the bell on the counter. Ding. Ding Ding Ding. He had rung it repeatedly before his wife slapped him upside the head. “You’re like a child.” She scolded. The wooden floorboard beneath them creaked, and Chell jumped, she didn’t want to but before she realized what she was doing it was too late. “Yeah… I think we should leave.” Erick said, trying to shake the eeriness off. “It’s too late.” Michelle said as she looked at her watch, it was nearing nine at night, and they needed a place to rest. “I’ll sleep in the car.” Erick said as he turned to open the door. Corey and Chell turned their attention to him, pleading with him to stop being scared. Corey felt a hand being placed upon his shoulder and he jumped, his heart felt like it was ready to come out of his throat because he hadn’t heard anyone approach him. “May I help you?” said the boy, who looked to be in his teens. “Yes… Kody is it?” Michelle said reading his nametag. He was slender, but even so they should have heard him walk towards them. She stared at his facial hair that made him look older, she would give him late twenties. Something about his looks creeped her out, but she wouldn’t show it. “Can I help you?” he repeated, his voice above a whisper. Erick felt Goosebumps rising inside of his arms, he hadn’t seen this kid come either. “Do you work here?” Erick asked stupidly, Kody looked at his nametag and shook his head. “I think so…” he said in a weird way. “We’re looking to for a room for the weekend, and I checked you guys out and you do skiing and room and board, correct?” her speech was hurried. He looked her over, from the sweatsuit that covered her body up to her blue eyes. She felt a chill run through her spine as he looked her over. “One second I will go grab the manager.” He said as he silently walked away. Corey looked baffled, he took a step and his feet squeaked the wooden floorboard. He took another one and gotten the same result. “I say we leave, that guy creeps me the hell out.” Erick said, he began to shudder and it wasn’t from the cold. “It’s late, it’s just in our minds.” Corey finally spoke again. The kid came back a minute later with an older gentleman, his face cleancut besides his goatee. His short brown hair flowed neatly ontop his head. “What can I do for you fine folks.” He beamed a smile towards them, and it made them rest a little easier. “I’m Brian.” He extended his hand for them to shake, and Corey met his grip with his own. “I’m Michelle, and this is Corey and Erick.” She met their faces with their names. “Looking to ski this weekend I hear?” Brian asked, “We haven’t had a skier here in a while.” He admitted, he seemed happy to have their business. “I see why.” Erick mumbled under his breath, and Kody glared at him, his brown eyes locked onto Erick from behind his glasses. “You guys have met my helper Kody.” The boy looked but didn’t say anything. “Yes we did, and it was a pleasure to meet him.” Michelle lied, she wasn’t bound to tell him that she was horrified of the kid. He looked almost like your typical serial killer. She shook the thought out of her mind.

Corey and Erick took a seat on the couch while Chell registered them, Kody was sweeping the floor near them and it made Erick uneasy. He didn’t like the staring Kody was giving him earlier. Brian casually smiled and answered all of the questions Michelle had to ask, he glanced over at Kody, he kept his eyes on him while Chell talked. Feeling his stare upon his back, Kody turned his head in his direction, Brian smiled at him, and he smiled back. Corey started to sweat witnessing that, he wasn’t sure if it was some hidden signal or not, if he hadn’t gotten high before he left, he wouldn’t have been so paranoid. He used that as the excuse of why he was so jumpy and on edge tonight. His mind was playing tricks on him. “Thank you for your business. Kody will show you to your rooms.” Brian waved to his helper, Kody set the broom against the wall and sulked towards him. “Is it me, or does that kid just seems not right?” Erick whispered when Kody was out of listening range. “I…” Corey began before Kody grabbed his bags and told them to follow. He walked down the corridor without making a sound, not even a grunt at how heavy the bag was. “Let’s go.” Chell ushered them on, they got up and followed, nodding to the smiling Brian as they passed. “How to survive a horror movie...” Erick began. “Never follow the serial killer-like bellboy to your room.” He finished and he made Corey laugh and it drew the young man’s attention. He just smiled at them, a creepy one, with his face twisted. “Your rooms are here.” He pointed to the doors. The smile not leaving his lips as they grabbed their bags and took up the two rooms assigned to them. He bid them farewell and Chell couldn’t have been happier that he left.

Erick called it a night, deciding to get some slumber in and decide what to do tomorrow. Sleeping here the night wasn’t going to be easy on him. He wasn’t really ever freaked out by anything, unless he had a good reason to be, but tonight he was scared out of his wits. A deserted ski resort only occupied by his friends, the manager and a bellboy who looks like he doesn’t like people. He tossed and turned, it was something about Kody that made him uneasy. Chell brushed her hair, she had put on her pajamas and was talking with her husband. He seemed ready to go to bed also, but she hadn’t grown that tired yet. Looking around her room, the television that they had in here was for props seeing as how it was busted. She skimmed her bag for a book to read. She lay next to Corey, and she let her eyes focus on the pages while he told her what was on his mind. “Maybe if we didn’t get high we wouldn’t be so jumpy. The kid seems normal.” Corey muttered to her, she didn’t look up at him. “Maybe so, but he still freaks me out.” “That’s because you watch too many movies.” He laughed as he rubbed her shoulder. “He’s just probably working part time here, a job is a job.” He figured aloud. “Look can we not discuss the bellhop.” She pleaded with him. “Fine.” Corey agreed, he didn’t know what to discuss though.

Erick had arisen from his dream in the middle of the night, he panted heavily. He flipped the lamp beside his bed light on and stared at his watch. One in the morning the face read. He wasn’t the one to have nightmares, but tonight it invaded his dreams. He wiped the sweat off his face with his cover. The bellboy, Kody had chased him wielding an axe all throughout the place. Erick laughed to himself at how silly it seemed. He had stayed in far scarier places than this. He got out of his bed and fumbled for the light switch, he hit it. He located the remote on the dresser and picked it up with his hands. He plopped back onto the comfortable bed and hit the power button. Nothing happened, he clicked it again. He slid back the battery compartment to make sure there were batteries in there and clicked again with the same response. He sighed and threw it at the TV. He laughed as he thought of a way to entertain himself. He got out of bed, pulled a t-shirt on and went to open the door. The wood creaked under his heavy footing. “There goes super-sleuth.” He laughed to himself. He walked down the hall, he spotted what he was looking for. “Restroom, I got to piss like a racehorse.” He laughed again. He pushed the door open and to his surprise it didn’t creak like everything else here. He hit the light switch but the room remained dark. “I see, don’t scare me when I open the door, but leave the lights blown out so I piss in the dark next to who-knows-what.” He said with a bit of anger, “I can’t see shit.” He complained. Blindly he searched for the toilet, and he found it, he didn’t care to flush it after he was done. Not that he didn’t have manners, but he wanted to get the hell out of here before The Thing pops up. He stood in front of the sink, he cut the water on, and waited until it was warm enough to dip his fingers into. He let the soap glide over his hands and he wet them in the water, suds flowing down the drainpipe. He looked at his reflection, he touched his beard playfully. “One sexy mofo.” He laughed to himself, Erick wasn’t ever serious unless he had to be. He looked down to cut the faucet off and looked back up at himself. He jumped, banging his knee against the sink. He cursed as the pain shot through his entire knee. He frantically looked behind him and saw nothing. “Bullshit.” He cried. “You little fucker.” He knew he saw Kody behind him, but he wasn’t there. His nerves were at an all-time high as panic rushed through his heart. Just like in his dream, the boy stood behind him with a bright red fire-axe. Sweat danced around his face before dripping to the floor. He looked to his side, he hadn’t heard anyone come in, but then again he hadn’t heard Kody earlier when he was in the lobby. Once his heart started beating at a normal pace, he decided maybe it was just him overacting. “Don’t be a drama queen.” He told himself. He looked at the man in the mirror. “You’re too sexy for that.” He laughed again, shaking the ounces of fear away little by little. He opened the door to leave, walking back towards his room he stopped. He ducked behind the corner as he witnessed Brian dragging Kody behind him, who was kicking and screaming, but his voice was inaudible. “Shut it.” Brian yelled at him, “It’s for your own safety.” He said as he stopped outside a room with padlocks on it. He fiddled around for his keys and when he pulled them out he undid each of the six locks. “What the fu….” Erick began under his breath. Kody looked as if he was in a lot of pain the way he squirmed on the ground. Brian grabbed him by his neck as if he was a puppy, shoving him towards the room, which Kody tried to resist. When he squirmed Brian hit him, hard. Knocking the air out of his lungs, his mouth closed and it no longer looked like he was screaming. “We can’t have you causing trouble with our guest. I hope you understand.” Brian said as he pulled out a pistol. Erick stared at the silver metal, fear crept back into his heart. “I can’t sit here…” he thought, he might witness a murder, and that’s when he panicked, if he would kill him, he might kill us. The gun went off silently and he noticed that Kody’s body no longer squirmed. “Shit.” He whispered to himself. He was expecting to see a bunch of blood and gore, but then he noticed the dart sticking out of Kody’s neck. “This will quiet you for a while, just because I love you.” Brian said as he hoisted him up on his shoulders. He stepped into the room and out of Erick’s view. “You’re too dangerous.” He heard him say. “If we get another episode like last time, I will be forced to close business. It’s already slow because of you.” He spat. Erick crept around until he was outside of the door, he heard straps being locked into place. He peeked his head inside and watched as Brian tied Kody to the chair, the leather straps cutting into his skin. Now he understood why Kody didn’t want to go in here. He watched as Brian fitted the nuzzle around his mouth. “You’re really a hassle to keep up with Kody.” Brian said as he finished placing the muzzle over his mouth, tightening the grip. “Sleep well.” He said as the gun fired another dart into his body.
